“They milked it too hard, too fast”: Fans Wage War as Christian Bale’s The Dark Knight Writer Reveals WB’s MCU Obsession Killed a Whole Cinematic Universe

Fans Wage War as Christian Bale’s The Dark Knight Writer Reveals WB's MCU Obsession Killed a Whole Cinematic Universe

Many studios have tried to build their own cinematic worlds ever since Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) became a huge success. Thus, it is not surprising that DC and WB also tried to follow in their footsteps. However, screenwriter David S. Goyer, the man behind Christian Bale’s The Dark Knight trilogy, Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, and Ben Affleck’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, has recently provided insight into the unsuccessful attempts by the studios to create their own interconnected superhero universe.

Goyer wrote all three Blade movies starring Wesley Snipes before working on Batman and Superman movies. Even the third movie, Blade: Trinity, was directed by him. In other words, he is well-versed in the art of producing successful superhero films.

Christian Bale’s The Dark Knight Writer Talks WB and DC Universe Problems

During a recent career-spanning interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, David S. Goyer shared some deep conversations with the host Joshua Horowitz. The screenwriter argued that Warner Bros. should have collaborated with Henry Cavill on a standalone Superman sequel rather than trying to create a cinematic universe with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The studio made this decision to counter Marvel as Goyer shared:

“I know the pressure we were getting from Warner Bros., which was, ‘We need our MCU! We need our MCU!’ And I was like let’s not run before we walk. The other thing that was difficult at the time was there was this revolving door of executives at Warner Bros. and DC. Every 18 months someone new would come in. We were just getting whiplash. Every new person was like, ‘We’re going to go bigger!’”

These circumstances will not exactly promote a creative atmosphere, as Goyer continued:

“I remember at one point the person running Warner Bros. at the time had this release that pitched the next 20 movies over the next 10 years. But none of them had been written yet! it was crazy how much architecture was being built on air… This is not how you build a house.”

Fans’ Reactions To WB’s MCU Obsession

The process of WB trying to create its own cinematic universe has been filled with highs and lows. From The Dark Knight trilogy’s early success to Green Lantern and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s failures, it is evident that creating a successful comic book universe is not an easy task.

Thus, this is very alarming for fans who expressed their opinions on social media, as one fan shared on Twitter:

One person alleged that they (film studios) panicked too quickly and released movies with “30min missing & did knee jerk reactions”:

Warner Brothers tried to run before they could walk, according to a fan, who said:

This, according to another fan, is the reason they “abandoned the stereoscopic 3D”:

Ultimately, this will “hurt them”, a fan stated:

One fan complained that the studio “messed up” badly:

David S. Goyer and Christian Bale collaborated on The Dark Knight trilogy.

However, Henry Cavill was never given the opportunity to star in another standalone Superman film after Man of Steel because the majority of his time wearing the red cape was spent in universe-building blockbusters like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Anyway, you can stream The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel on Max.
