Director Kelly Fremon Craig’s 2023 film, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret., was based on the 1970 novel of the same name by Judy Blume. Actress Rachel McAdams was delighted to play the role of Barbara Simon in the film, however, preparing for the role was stressful for her. Blume, Craig, and McAdams spent a lot of time crafting the character so it stays true to the material in the novel. In April, McAdams appeared for an interview with Bustle and recalled,
“I was worried some days. ‘Is this too much? Is this distracting?’ I hated thinking about that. Why do I even care? But it’s hard not to!”
The actress felt self-conscious throughout the filming process. In the end, McAdams’ efforts paid off as her performance was widely praised. With a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.4 IMDb rating, the film managed to captivate the audience with its storytelling and faithful adaptation.

McAdams was interested in acting throughout her teenage years. She enrolled in York University’s four-year theatre program and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts honors degree in 2001. After that, she made minor appearances in various Canadian movies and TV shows.
She made her Hollywood film debut in 2002 with Rob Schneider and Anna Faris in the comedy The Hot Chick. The shift in her career came with 2004’s The Notebook and Mean Girls. These two movies made McAdams a superstar and opened doors to bigger opportunities in Hollywood.
