Eiichiro Oda Has One Regret From ‘One Piece’- Major Character’s Death Left Oda Heartbroken

The One Piece anime series was a piece of art in itself, and now, for the first time ever, its live-action remake is blowing up the internet with praises from fans globally. But while audiences worldwide are continuing to fall in love with it, its creator Eiichiro Oda is actually left with some regrets about the anime series: one that majorly involves the elimination of one fan-favorite character.

While Oda is renowned for not killing many characters since the series is mainly marketed to younger audiences and showing too much violence would be deemed disturbing, he did kill this one character, who also became a major favorite among fans, only to regret his brutal death later on when the series got animated.

Although One Piece deals with the everyday fight between pirates and the Government, the show’s creator Eiichiro Oda is famous for not eliminating too many characters from the series, even if it means bringing them back from the brink of death. But that wasn’t the case with Portgus D. Ace.

Portgus D. Ace was first introduced in the “Arabasta Saga” as the easy-going big brother who mirrored the character of Luffy in many ways. Yet, while creating this character, Oda had already decided that he was to get eliminated at some point. However, since fans fell in love with him right from the beginning, his tragic death had to be delayed until later on.

During the Summit War, Ace tried to protect Luffy from Akainu’s attack. Although he himself possessed similar fire attributes, he was no match for the seasoned veteran Marine Admiral and wound up giving his life after getting impaled by Akainu’s Fire Fist, with a short heartwarming speech to Luffy being his last words.

The editors of One Piece were already familiar with the effect and popularity of the Fire Fist and didn’t want Eiichiro Oda to bring such a tragic end to the character. But Oda had his own point of view and ended up killing Ace in a pretty brutal manner – even though he admitted to having regretted it later on.

Though the other deaths impacted viewers as well, Portgus D. Ace’s death was by far the most tragic and traumatizing event in the entire series, which left fans heartbroken and in tears.

Why Portgus D. Ace’s Death Was Necessary For Luffy In One Piece

Even though Portgus D. Ace’s death was a truly tragic event, it was necessary for Luffy. This was because his death gave Luffy the much-needed push he needed on his way to become the Pirate King and he and the remaining Straw Hats were able to increase in strength afterward only: also the reason why Eiichiro Oda created the character in the first place.

However, it wasn’t like Luffy wasn’t emotionally affected by Ace’s death – he was, in fact, traumatized by the event to the point where he found his own life meaningless. But thanks to Jinbe who interfered with his negative thoughts and made him snap out of it, Luffy didn’t end up harming himself.

Instead, he only became stronger. Then the time-skip happened and each Straw Hat took it upon themselves to make sure not to repeat the tragedy of the war and trained aggressively for the same. Just like that, the story of One Piece had its entire course changed completely as the Straw Hats returned stronger than ever following the two-year gap.
