Mortal Kombat 1 has only recently launched and has been surrounded by controversy over its visuals on Nintendo Switch. Players have also discovered several bugs, long loading times, inconsistent framerates, and more. While there was always going to be a difference between how the Switch version of the game looked from PS5, and the Xbox Series X|S, due to its hardware. However, the downgrade surprised the fans.
The official Mortal Kombat 1 Switch launch trailer has now come under fire for apparently showing gameplay footage from the game’s PC version. Players noticed a Steam achievement notification pop-up in the trailer published on the Nintendo of America YouTube channel on the day of the full launch of Mortal Kombat 1.
Mortal Kombat 1 Switch Trailer Uses PC Gameplay Footage
Mortal Kombat 1 launched on September 19th following early access and is the latest entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise. There has been an uproar regarding the game as the fans spotted a Steam achievement notification pop-up in the Switch launch trailer. The pop-up briefly appears at 1:52 during the new trailer and suggests that at least some parts of the trailer are PC footage.

The trailer saw commenters criticizing the video for being misleading as many reported that Mortal Kombat 1 is way worse in visuals and performance, contrary to what’s shown in the trailer. However, the video is now made private by Nintendo.
Mortal Kombat 1 Switch Version Lacks on All Fronts
Mortal Kombat 1 is a highly-anticipated title in a franchise that’s been around for over 30 years, and the fans have slammed the Nintendo Switch version badly. Players stated that character models are of low quality, with no presence of facial expressions. This was surprising for players as the previous game in the series, Mortal Kombat 11 was launched on PS4, Xbox One, and PC with Nintendo Switch, and the Switch version was an impressive port.
Mortal Kombat 1 ditched last-gen consoles for PS5 and Xbox Series, to only surprise the fans with a way worse port on Switch that none of them anticipated. Another reason for the scrutiny of the game was the missing Invasions mode. The Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 only has a tutorial of the game mode and it will be launched in a few weeks, as stated on the WB Games support page.

These issues with such a highly-anticipated game that celebrates the franchise have left the fans in awe. The question that arises is why would Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios bring the game to Switch in such a condition. There was also an alternative for the game to be released on the next-gen Nintendo Switch 2, which allegedly was showcased at Gamescom 2023.
Following the heavy criticism of the Switch port, series creator Ed Boon stated on BBC that the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 will “absolutely be getting an update.” He further said,
“And a number of the concerns of the issues that had come up will absolutely be addressed. It would have been ideal for us to have released the version that we absolutely wanted. But anything that we’re finding a problem with is on our list and is going to be fixed. It will be supported, like we did with Mortal Kombat 11.”
This statement from Boon might give a few players the relief of Mortal Kombat 1 being fixed with a few patches but it is not certain when the patch might arrive. However, it still does not justify this recklessness from the developers for such a big game and given the price tag of $70, it just doesn’t make sense.
