One Piece has taken several turns throughout its lore. Chapter 1037 of the manga presented fans with an entirely new perspective of mysteries to uncover. It was told in the series that there is a Devil Fruit so unique that its existence has been erased from history. This prompted fans to figure out what that Devil Fruit might be.
After over 1,000 episodes into the anime, One Piece fans wondered if that special Devil Fruit was even shown in the series or not. There has been enough foreshadowing towards Luffy’s Devil Fruit for fans to conclude that the fruit in question is the Gomu Gomu no Mi. However, despite being mocked by so many characters in the series, a Redditor developed their own theory regarding Luffy’s actual Devil Fruit.
What did fans theorize about Luffy’s Gum-Gum Devil Fruit in One Piece?
A fan of One Piece on Reddit came up with their own theory with rather intricate details involving the World Government. In the post, they explain that contrary to popular belief, Luffy’s Devil Fruit isn’t actually the Paramecia Gomu Gomu no Mi, but the mythical Zoan type called the Hito Hito no Mi: Model Hanuman. This theory wasn’t just skipping stones on water; they provided plenty of evidence in the post to support their hypothesis.
Theory: The truth behind Luffy’s devil fruit!!

The theory traces some aspects of Luffy’s Devil Fruit, which is somewhat distinct from other paramecia types. His powers are always active, and his entire body turning into the rubber is opposed to many, if not all, paramecia-style fruits. These elements are indications of logia-type fruit that can change the user into its natural elements. His power also allows him to enhance his physical prowess and turn his body into different forms, such as Gears Third and Fourth. These are all evidence that signifies the presence of Zoan fruits.
Where is the Hito Hito no Mi: Model Hanuman in One Piece inspired from?
All mythical Zoans are inspired by real-world mythologies and legends. Similarly, the tale of Hanuman The Monkey God, is taken from Hinduism. The lore of Hanuman begins with him being a child and mistaking the sun as a fruit. He jumps into the sky and tries to consume it.
However, this entire predicament was being seen by the King of all gods, Indra. He intervenes and strikes Hanuman with his lightning which ends up killing the Monkey God. Lord Shiva also becomes aware of what’s happening and decides to resurrect Hanuman. After that, even Indra, as well as other gods, allow him the abilities and powers to make up for his mistake.
