It would have been cool to see Zendaya’s Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson in combat with notorious MCU villain Green Goblin played by Willem Dafoe from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man universe. Recently, Marvel Studios concept artist Phil Saunders shared never-before-seen concept art that featured Zendaya’s MJ vs. Green Goblin final battle in the $1.9 billion movie.

“This was one of the most fun keyframes to do for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ In an earlier version of the script, Green Goblin ends up stabbing Spidey, just before MJ drops on his back and manages to plunge the antidote needle into his neck. It was great working out the dynamics of this composition to capture the drama of the moment,” Saunders revealed about the deleted scene (via The Direct).

In Saunders’ photo of the battle, Green Goblin pulls Tom Holland’s Peter Parker up by grabbing his throat while the blood of the Spider-Man is seen on Goblin’s weapon. MJ came in for rescue and jumped on Goblin’s back with the antidote to cure him of the madness and send him back to his world.

Marvel Kept Willem Dafoe a Secret For a While

Looking at the box office numbers of the MCU, it appears that Marvel has cracked the code of the box office. However, it has never been easy, especially when it comes to keeping it a secret to influence suspense among fans. The makers of Spider-Man: No Way Home also hid Dafoe from the spotlight for a while, at least when he was filming his scenes. Speaking with Jimmy Fallon in his show, Dafoe revealed how Marvel kept him away from the news.

“They did, they did. And they did it beautifully. And, first of all, I thought, you know, these movies – these Marvel movies, have such a strong fan base. People are so curious about them. Even when they’re being made, people are trying to figure out what’s going on. But they really decided they were going to keep some of the elements a secret. And I won’t say what some of those elements are for anyone that hasn’t seen the movie. But, for me — Yeah, when I’d go to set, they put me in a black cloak and always had me in a car with dark windows. And they didn’t want me hanging out anyplace because they didn’t want anyone to I was in the movie,” Dafoe told Fallon.

Dafoe was skeptical of the idea at first, “I didn’t think it would work,” he added. But, actually, it did, “and only just before the movie was released, they started kind of hinting things in the trailers” which as he put it was cool. Dafoe’s presence was incredible in the film, also, reportedly, the actor did his own stunts in the movie.
