"This is me as a fat geek just geeking out": Guillermo del Toro's Dream to Make 'The Godfather' Like Star Wars Movie For Jabba the Hutt Never Came True

Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-winning director confirmed he was going to make a Star Wars film about Jabba the Hutt. This comes after David Goyer revealed that he wrote a Star Wars script for Guillermo del Toro. It’s not certain whether the two are still engaged with that idea or not, but we hope it becomes a reality, right?

However, Guillermo del Toro has worked on projects outside of the Star Wars property. He initially collaborated with Goyer on Blade II, a movie Goyer wrote. Along with the original Pacific Rim movie, Del Toro also helmed the first two Hellboy movies. His movies got multiple Oscar nominations. In 2018, The Shape of Water won the award for Best Picture.

Guillermo del Toro Was About to Direct a Star Wars Movie

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, David S. Goyer recently divulged that he had written a script for a Star Wars film that Guillermo del Toro was going to helm “about four years ago,” but it never happened.

He said it was a “cool script” and suggested that host Josh Horowitz ask del Toro about it.

Meanwhile, Del Toro had spoken about making a Jabba the Hutt origin film earlier. This would be akin to The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola. He acknowledged that the ideas were “not real” and were more like his own thoughts spoken out.

He shared his dream with Yahoo! Movies. “I would do the sort of Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control,” del Toro said. “I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup. I just love the character.”

Guillermo del Toro is sadly one of the many who didn’t get to see their Star Wars movies.

Why The Guillermo del Toro Directorial Star Wars Movie Never Happened?

People started imagining Del Toro as the director of Jabba: A Star Wars Story, however, it did not come to reality. The exact reason Guillermo Del Toro‘s movie never happened remains unknown.

As to why such a seemingly happening project didn’t happen, Goyer told host Josh Horowitz:

There was just a lot of behind [the scenes] stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time,” Goyer said. “But it’s a cool script.”

Soon after, del Toro himself confirmed the news on X. “True,” the director posted. “Can’t say much. Maybe two letters “J” and “BB” is that three letters?” And, it points towards none other than Jabba the Hutt himself.

Here’s del Toro’s confirmation as well as Goyer’s quote.

This is not the first project by Guillermo del Toro that failed to come to fruition despite overwhelming enthusiasm. Del Toro was reportedly interested in a number of other movies over the years, including the Halo film, a third Hellboy movie, a film based on Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride, and more.

All the Star Wars movies are available to watch on Disney.
